Peels: understanding the different approaches

“Peel” is too broad a term to guide a decision. The important questions are how deeply it acts and why that depth is appropriate.

Depth before the name

A superficial peel affects the outermost skin, may be repeated and often causes little disruption to daily life. A medium-depth peel has more visible effects and requires a clearer indication. A deep peel is a substantial procedure with a significant healing period. Referring to all three simply as “a little peel” obscures important differences.

The agent is not a detail

Different acids do not penetrate in the same way, and do not leave the same recovery. The practice has not published its own: it will be named before the procedure, with its concentration. Be wary of a treatment that will not say what it applies.

The sun is part of the risk

Recently peeled skin is vulnerable to sun exposure and may develop pigmentation changes. The season, holidays and even a bicycle commute matter as much as the choice of acid. Postponing a peel may be the safest decision.
